Upcoming Changes to UK Stamp Duty in April 2025

From April 1, 2025, significant changes to Stamp Duty Land Tax (SDLT) in England and Northern Ireland will take effect, impacting both first-time buyers and home movers. These changes mark the end of the temporary tax relief introduced in September 2022 and could add thousands to the cost of buying a property.

Key Changes

1. Lower Threshold for General Buyers

      •   The tax-free threshold for all buyers will drop from £250,000 to £125,000.

2. Higher Costs for Second Homes & Buy-to-Let Investors

      •   The surcharge on additional properties (buy-to-let, second homes, investment properties) will increase from 3% to 5%.
